This study is a study on the recycling method of idle facilities in the military,
which is now neglected due to it's policy reasons and social factors. The research on
the recycling of the military idle facilities is relatively insufficient. Therefore, this
study was conducted to analyze the case of US troops who have been left as an idle
land and succeeded in recycling as a cultural experience facility.
For the case study, the concept of idle facilities, the background of the occurrence
of military idle facilities, the concept of cultural experience facilities, and the
theoretical background of US military bases were examined. The research was
conducted by the USFK from 1953 to 2004 and was returned to the ROK
government following the US decision to return to the US military in 2007.
As a result of the case study, Camp Grieves has been designated as a 'security
tourism destination' in 2016 due to the security-related exhibitions, the youth hostel
operation, and the filming location for drama shooting, taking advantage of the
speciality and experience of military idle facilities.
