The post convention tour programs offered to the convention attendees after the convention and the tours are usually half-day or one-day course within the convention venue city. However, considering the time constraint matter, most of the tour programs are only offered in a brief and simple style. Moreover, these tour programs seem to be similar regarding the courses. Considering the fact that these tours can provide better impression to those who visited the city only for the convention purpose, proper tour courses for the post convention tours should be orgaoized while representing image of Seoul. Though the importance of convention industry and its impact on other industries such as in economy, culture, environment and politics has been continuously stressed out, the importance of post convention tour programs has been undervalued. Therefore, this paper aims to examine how post convention tour programs can form and act as soft power according to Nye``s soft power theory. In addition, the representation of Seoul as a tour destination is accessed by examining the post convention tour programs appeared in the websites. The basic methodology of this paper is a visual analysis and in order to do so, visual materials-images- were collected from three different types of websites: websites of convention/conference held in Seoul between January and June 2014; websites of tour agencies located in Seoul; and Korea Tourism Organization/Seoul Tourism Bureau/Seoul Convention & Visitors Bureau. After content analysis, the images were sorted into categories and both denotative and connotative meanings of the images according to the categories are offered. Also, the relation between soft power and post convention tour programs is explained. The results of the study provide implications both in theoretical and practical perspectives. As for theoretical implication, soft power will verify its impact on tourism industry and convention tour programs. ill practical perspective, tourism operators and convention organizers as well as Seoul Tourism Bureau and Convention Bureau can refer to the results and should develop more diverse post convention tour programs targeting international attendees. It is suggested that image of Seoul should represent aod be utilized in constructing those convention tour programs. |
